Libertyville Little League Offers Summer Jobs For Teens

Libertyville, IL – Registration for the Libertyville Little League spring and summer 2019 seasons will begin on Sunday, December 1.  Boys and girls ages five to 18 years can register to play baseball in one of the northern suburbs’ largest, independently-operated youth sports leagues.  However, this year, young adults interested in becoming a baseball umpire will also be eligible to register for summer jobs with the Little League, too!

Interested young adults must be at least 13 years old by September 1 of the year they begin umpiring and live within the Little League’s boundaries, including Libertyville, Green Oaks, Rondout and MWR Great Lakes naval station.

Kevin Scott, Umpire-In-Chief for the Libertyville Little League, said that the Little League “takes great pride in offering this opportunity to area teens.  Being an umpire builds self-confidence, teaches responsibility, punctuality and communication skills with peers and adult coaches.”  The chance to umpire an organized sport is many of the league’s young umpires’ first jobs, and Libertyville Little League umpires can earn $15.00 to $25.00 per game, depending on experience.  The youth sports league budgets more than $15,000 each year to support local umpires’ employment –funds that stay within and directly benefit our community.

At a time when many youth sports leagues across the country are having trouble finding enough officials to umpire or referee their sports, the Libertyville Little League consistently employees between 70 and 100 teenagers each year.  The young umpires will receive formal training prior to the start of the season, and Little League Board Members are available to supervise, continually coach and train the umpires throughout the season.  Umpire harassment is strictly forbidden within the Libertyville Little League, and the league’s administration stands strongly behind its young employees.

Umpiring for Libertyville Little League is a great chance for our area youth to earn money, accept more responsibility and grow their confidence in dealing with adults.  Many of our umpires continue on and become “patched” (“licensed”) umpires through the Illinois High School Association when they turn 15, which allows them to umpire travel baseball games and earn more money per game.

Any umpires ages 13-16 must print "Letter Of Intent" from the Libertyville Little Leagues’ website, and complete a "Work Permit" form with their junior high or high school guidance counselor.  Background checks are required and performed for all umpires 16 years old and older.

Umpire-In-Chief Scott acknowledges that young adults and their families are very busy during the spring and summer months.  Therefore, the league works with its young employees’ schedules to allow flexibility for other activities and ensure adequate officiating coverage for each game.  The league’s Arbiter scheduling system allows umpires to block dates when they are not available, self-assign games that they choose, and accept or decline games the system invites them to umpire.  Arbiter also ranks the umpire based on experience, so they will only be allowed to umpire games that fit their experience level.  An umpire’s ranking can move up during the season based on experience, allowing young umpires to take on more responsibility and earn more money.
